Sterling may need to verify your current employment when employment verification is included in the employer's screening package. That does not mean every Sterling background check contacts your current employer. The package, the information available, and the instructions in your authorization process matter.
If your employer does not know you are looking for another job, raise that concern before submitting the employment-history form. Do not assume a general background-check consent form answers every question about who will be contacted.
Check what the employer ordered
Background screening is not one universal search. A package can include criminal records, identity checks, education, employment verification, or other services relevant to the role.
Our overview of what a Sterling background check covers explains those categories. The actual package and authorization presented to you are the source for your application.
Look for employer-contact instructions
Read the section for your current position carefully. If it asks whether the screening provider may contact that employer, select the answer that reflects your circumstances. If the form does not give you a clear choice, contact the prospective employer or the support route in your invitation before proceeding.
Ask a precise question: “My current employer has not been notified of my job search. Will you contact them for this check, and can current employment be verified through documents or another method instead?”
Get the answer in writing when possible. A confidentiality concern is easier to handle before verification begins than after an unexpected contact.
Verification and a manager reference are different
An employment verification may check dates and job details through an employer's authorized contact or available records. A reference discussion asks about your work and performance. Confirm which is being requested rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Sterling's candidate help page explains that it contacts employers to verify work history and may ask candidates for supporting information. It does not establish one universal current-employer contact workflow for every market and customer.
If an alternative verification method is offered
Provide only the documents requested through the verified screening channel. Ask what information the documents need to show and whether unrelated financial information may be redacted. The provider decides which evidence is acceptable for that package; supplying a document does not guarantee it replaces employer contact.
If verification has already started, contact the provider and prospective employer promptly. Ask them to confirm the contact restriction and the remaining steps rather than simply deleting your current employer from the form.
For recruiters: separate history from capability
Explain the package and contact process clearly so candidates can disclose genuine concerns. Employment verification checks records; it does not establish whether someone can perform the new role. Structured candidate evaluation supports the separate skills and assessment stage and does not replace Sterling's verification.
Bottom line
Do not assume Sterling always contacts your current employer or never does. Check the ordered package, read the contact-permission instructions, and confirm a confidentiality concern before the employment-verification process starts.
