How to Cancel or Pause a Sponsored Job on Indeed (Employer Steps)

12 min read

Pausing or closing a Sponsored Job on Indeed stops new spending on that job. It does not erase charges you already accrued, so a bill or card charge can still arrive after you pause the listing.

Use Paused when you want to stop new applications while reviewing the candidates you already have. Use Closed when you have filled the role or no longer need to hire. Both remove the job from job-seeker search results and stop sponsorship spending.

Does pausing an Indeed sponsored job stop charges?

Yes: once the job is Paused, it stops accruing new Sponsored Job charges. Indeed's Employer Support guidance states that jobs do not accrue charges once they are Paused or Closed.

The distinction is between new spending and payment for earlier activity. Pausing a job stops the former; it does not cancel the latter. If your job accrued billable activity before you paused it, that outstanding balance can still be collected on the applicable billing schedule.

For example, if you pause a job after it has accrued $40 in charges, pausing stops new sponsorship spend on that job. You still owe the $40 already accrued. The date a payment appears on your statement does not, by itself, tell you when the activity happened.

Before deciding whether to stop a campaign or improve it, review the typical ROI for Indeed sponsored postings. If you have enough suitable applicants to review, pausing can control spend while you work through that shortlist.

How to pause a Sponsored Job on Indeed

  1. Sign in to your Indeed employer account.
  2. Open the Jobs dashboard.
  3. Find the job whose spending you want to stop.
  4. Open the job's Status dropdown, which may currently show Open.
  5. Select Paused and confirm the change if prompted.
  6. Check that the job now displays Paused in your dashboard.

You retain access to existing applicants while the listing is paused. Repeat the check for each Sponsored Job you want to stop: pausing one listing does not pause every job in your account.

How to close a job when hiring is finished

Follow the same dashboard steps, but choose Closed instead of Paused. Indeed recommends closing a job when you have made a hire or no longer need to fill the position.

Closing removes the listing from search results and archives it. You can still review applications and message people who applied before it was closed. If you later decide to reopen or sponsor the role again, review its status and budget before making it active.

Pause, close, or stop sponsoring: which should you choose?

  • Pause the job: temporarily stop its visibility, new applications, and sponsorship spending while keeping it in your dashboard.
  • Close the job: end the current hiring activity and archive the listing.
  • Downgrade from Sponsored to Free: change the promotion arrangement rather than pause the job itself. Free-post eligibility and visibility depend on Indeed's current rules.

Indeed's pricing guidance specifically notes that downgrading a job from Sponsored to Free may still leave remaining charges for billable activity. Those charges will not exceed your maximum budget. Do not treat that change as cancellation of an existing balance.

Why can Indeed charge you after you pause a job?

A later charge may settle activity that happened before the pause. Indeed's published US pricing guidance describes billing on the first day of the month or when account spending reaches $500, whichever comes first. Billing arrangements can vary by market and contract, so check your own Billing and Invoices page.

If a payment looks unexpected:

  1. Confirm the affected job is still Paused or Closed.
  2. Compare the invoice's activity period with the time you changed the status.
  3. Check whether another Sponsored Job in the account remains Open.
  4. Identify whether the charge is for a separate product or subscription.
  5. Contact Indeed Employer Support if the recorded activity appears to fall after the pause.

Pausing a Sponsored Job is separate from managing an Indeed Smart Sourcing subscription. Check the subscription settings if that is the service you want to stop paying for.

Bottom line

Pause or close the job from the Jobs dashboard to stop new Sponsored Job spending. Confirm the status change, keep reviewing your existing applicants, and check invoices for any balance earned before the pause. A later payment is not automatically evidence that the paused job kept spending.
